Hazelnuts are the world’s second most important tree-nut crop in terms of total value, after almonds and ahead of walnuts. Annual world demand for hazelnuts is approximately 1,200,000 metric tonnes. The major buyers of hazelnuts are European confectionery, baking and nut-spread companies. Demand is growing in traditional markets due to an emphasis on healthy foods. In addition, certain new markets such as China are growing at double-digit rates.
